Sutter Home Red Blend and Moscato

Not only have oil prices plunged so has the price of Sutter Home vino!  About q month ago  my local grocery store, Hy Vee, had a pallet of Sutter Home Moscato for $3  per bottle.  Yes, indulged.  Not my favorite moscato but not a bad mossie and at $3 a bottle many landed in my cart.  I love moscato.  Always best served chilled.

Something strange happened.  I let the cache wine grow to six bottles of  SH moscato.  One, however, was a bit darker than the others.  It had a green tint to it.  I wondered how it would taste.  On Thanksgiving, since it was COLD, I pulled several bottles down and placed them on the table outside to chill since there was no room in the fridge.  It was then I had a better look at the green one.  Bits of white substance floating inside the bottle and the seal was cracked.  I never noticed the broken seal before.  Needless to say but we did not consume that bottle and one of these days I will dump it out.  In all my adventures in cheap wine I have never experienced this.

Now my other Hy Vee has all varieties of Sutter Home on sale for $2.99 per bottle!  I let my taste wander a bit and picked up two bottles of the "Red Blend."  The label reads, "Easy-going dinner parties, tasty new recipes, and getting cozy by the fireplace.  Relax with out rich Red Blend.  This easy-going crowd-pleaser is bursting with juicy red fruit flavors and gorgeous vanilla aromas with hints of spicy oak."

I had mine at room temperature and served it straight out of the bottle tanins be damned.  It is a full bodied medium dry but feels lighter than a cab.  13.5% which seems a bit on the strong side.  I found it to be a pleasant wine.  The vanilla hints were not as strong as the Berringer but slightly noticeable.

Would I purchase Sutter Home Red Blend again?  Yes, at this price point.  When it goes back up to $5 or $6 I may if I was in the need for a dark red unless a comparable priced Malbec was available.  SH does not offer a Malbec.  I hope to find myself back at Windsor heights Hy Vee to acquire a few more.  I always like to have a deep red at home for meals.

Cheers!

Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon

I had ZERO expectations for this one.  Unknown Californian to me.  The name reminded me of a Two Buck Chuck that one would purchase several cases for his daughter's wedding.  "If you like this try our merlot."  I don't care for merlot.  But the price was right and I was on a mission to restock the red supply at home.  $3.99 at WalMart.  Wine does not get much cheaper than that.

The back label reads as follows: This carefully crafted wine has the aroma of vanilla and blackberry with a deep ruby color.  A medium-bodied, balanced wine layered with ripe fruit flavors.  It pairs well with a variety of meals or is great served on its own.

Vanilla in a cabernet?  Could not wait.  Undo the foil and there is a real cork.  No twist off.  Not just a cork but one of their own as opposed to a cheap generic.  I prefer my wine chilled and this one had been in the fridge for a few days.  This cuts down on the tanins.  First sip.  WOW!!  I could taste the vanilla!  Sorta reminded me of vanilla vodka.  As weird as it seemed it tasted great,  Unfortunately, that flavor was strongest during the first glass.  Subsequent glasses produced less and less of the flavor.  I briefly considered  adding vanilla to a cab in the future.  But even with the diminishing returns on the vanilla it is a pleasant wine to drink.  Will I try their merlot?  Doubt it.

Would I purchase another bottle?  Yes.  I want to experience the vanilla flavor again.  And the cost is right up my alley.
